马斯洛娃是备受欺凌与损害的俄国下层妇女的典型。从年轻时的天真浪漫到如何一步步地被社会逼上绝路，但她同时又在男主人公涅赫柳多夫的唤醒下，得到了精神上的复活，从而成为了新女性的代表，这也证明了俄国民众的觉醒。
涅赫柳多夫是一个走在时代前缘的人物。虽然年轻时对马斯洛娃犯下了不可磨灭的错误，但在法庭上再次见到马斯洛娃时，他的心没有片刻安宁，他开始走上了为自我赎罪的道路。他的许多举措，在旁人看来都是那么地疯狂，他要同马斯洛娃结婚，他要把她从牢房中救出来。他到底是为了弥补过错，还是内心真实的情感?我想两者都有，因此他才如此矛盾。他认为马斯洛娃此刻所遭受的痛苦都就应由他来承担，是的，那是一个改变马斯洛娃生命的夜晚。但每每回忆起青年时他们，涅赫柳多夫又会激起异样的情感。
这一杯具的造成，不仅仅是涅赫柳多夫一个人的过错，也是这个动荡社会的产物，而马斯洛娃正是这动荡社会下的牺牲者。
马斯洛娃入狱后，涅赫柳多夫经常去看她，并同她讲：我要娶你，不管结果如何，哪怕你被流放到西伯利亚，我也会跟随着你。马斯洛娃对此态度很冷淡，她不太坚信涅赫柳多夫会一向遵守他的`诺言，正因涅赫柳多夫是伯爵，而她只是一个入狱的苦命女子，但她又不拒绝他对她的好，也许是在她生活的那个圈子呆久了。
